BP#6 The Meatrix

The Meatrix was an animated movie about how meat factories treat animals while they are being processed for food.  The Meatrix is named after The Matrix except the animals are the ones fighting against this bad treatment.  The movie showed how animals like cows, chickens and pigs are packed into very tight spces that they can not even turn around.  There is no sunlight or fresh air for them to feel like they are outside.  They are so close together that they catch diseases from eachother and are given hormones and antibiotics to keep them fat and healthy.

These factories were put together to produce a lot of meat at one time and quiker but because of them the small family farms have gone out of business.  Now people are becoming aware of what is going on at these factories and that families and people who eat from these factories are not safe.  People are becoming infected with the disease from the animals and are eating the same hormones the they eat to.

I have heard these things before about what the factories are doing to the animals especially the hormones they give them.  People should definitely take steps to try not to buy meat from these factories.  This effects our families very much and especially our children who are still growing and should not be eating meats with hormones.  What we can do is buy free range meats which are animals that are grown in open fields.  I will try now to not eat meat from these factories.

BP#4 Green Week Lecture Summaries

The lectures were based on how we should preserve our environment.  One lecture focused on how we are not taking care of our environment and talked about ways to try to fix this.  Carbon dioxide is going into our air and people are doing this through cars and factory smoke.  We need to be more conscious of what we are doing. One way is to try not to drive our cars and ride our bikes.

Another lecture talked about our water.  Our water is becoming less and we could run out of it.  People are not using water wisely and the lecture showed ways we could do this.  One way was to reuse one container to drink water and also to take less showers.  Water is very valuable to us because it is what gives every living thing life.  I do believe these lectures were very informative and important because we should take action in trying to save our environment.  Our water and air is very important to all living things.  The only way to make an impact is for all people to learn this and spread this information to all.  Nothing can happen unless people can do something about it.

McDonalds to Hire 50,000 People

It only makes you wonder if McDonalds is doing well enough to hire all these people to pay.  In atime where there are no jobs this seems to be a good thing because it gives people work.  The only questions that might come up are is this a good pay to give to people so that they can support themselves? Many people these days want to find a job that is secure.  Will this be a secure job?  How will employees be treated in the workplace and will they have proper benefits and work hours?  McDonalds will have to live up to all these things while hiring these new workers.

Post 3

I started out by trying to find articles on working conditions of fast food company workers and ended up finding the two articles below which brought up wages of workers.  It seems that there is a lot of debate on minimum wage and effects of it on workers.  While workers want to be treated fairly in their jobs it seems that all they ask is to be treated faily and to be paid fairly also.  The topic of unions also comes up and how they protect the worker from these companies.  Below are two articles that are example of what I am talking about and how economista also use fast food companies to determine what policies might work for the economy and the work force.

In the article "Side Order of Human Rights" by Eric Schlosser, he writes about how a 4 year boycott set by a coalition of workers who represent migrant workers on farms has ended.  These migrant workers in Florida were asking for a pay raise and better working conditions.  The boycotts were against Yum Brands and specifically Taco Bell.  Many immigrant workers pick vegetables for suppliers of Taco Bell.  Taco Bell has not wanted to get involved but as boycotts began to spread nationwide major organizations began to give there support.  Taco Bell finally did get involved and gave in forcing suppliers to agree to give a raise to the workers.
"One Minimum Wage Increase and a Side of Fries, Please" discusses how economists are now suggesting that it could be possible that if minimum wage is increased then employment could increase as well.  Other conservative economists believe that this is opposite of what could happen, if minimum wages are increased then employment decreases.

eduard then

The language that I learned as a child and my first language is spanish.  Other than that I learned English mostly when I came to the United States 15 years ago.  I learned it mostly through others that I interacted with in daily life.  I didn't really learn how to write it and the only reading I did was of signs and things I had to read to get around.  I am most comfortable with spanish obviously and I can read and write it very well.

Reading English is not that much of a problem for me. I can read words and know there spelling very well therefore when I write in English it is not too much of a problem for me.  I would say though that I would like to continue learning and brushing up on my writing and reading to make it better.  One can never be too perfect at something.  I think I could always need improvement even though I can communicate very well so far in English.
